Reframing “UX Design”

Bruce Sterling once called experience design the most imperialistic design discipline, because “come on, what ISN’T an experience?” UX design felt like a completely useless concept to me because of it’s vagueness and overreaching ambition. Most popular definitions and understandings basically frame UX design as synonymous with design in general, so we might as well drop the U and X part.

Peter Merholz makes an interesting attempt at reframing UX in this piece:

UX design is not design-as-execution. UX design is what’s left.

I guess this is a slightly more useful definition than what i’m used to, but i’m still struggling to comprehend how this is fundamentally different from product design & strategy.
